Control Arms Campaign

Center for Defense Information

February 2004

Rachel Stohl, CDI Senior Analyst and International Action Network on Small Arms Board Member participated in The Control Arms Campaign launch in October 2003, sponsored by Amnesty International USA, the International Action Network on Small Arms and Oxfam America.

Every year, more than half a million people are killed by armed violence around the world. That’s one person every minute. The lack of controls on the global arms trade is fueling conflict, poverty and human rights violations worldwide. Every government around the world is responsible in stopping these horrors and abuses. In some cases, arms are being transferred to illegal groups that are terrorizing governments and civilians.

The United States, as the world’s largest exporter, has a special duty to lead the world in pushing for stronger arms controls. Oxfam, Amnesty International and IANSA are campaigning to bring the trade in weapons under control.
