The Interpretation of American Images in Southeastern Europe: Transmission of Global Metaphors
Danica Skara
February 2003
Abstract
This paper explores the contemporary phenomenon of a global/American culture and its role in Europe, with special reference to the challenges faced by the developing countries of Southeastern Europe.
The second part of this paper addresses the importance of language in globalization processes and identity construction. The impact of globalization in Croatia is seen as a model for similar processes in other parts of Southeastern Europe.
Three interrelated questions dominate the debate:
-
globalization seen as a gateway to the free world and new technology,
-
globalization seen as a threat to cultural and national identity,
-
global metaphors and global perception of the world.
These topics lead to an assumption that globality is not inherently a good or bad thing.
Every nation needs to find its unique way to modernity and a new identity.
