This Agenda Paper illustrates how the U.S. government played a positive, constructive role in helping Dominicans overcome the political problems that threatened the integrity of their 2000 presidential election. The long-term efforts of USAID in coordination with State Department officials' direct engagement with the country's political leaders proved essential in promoting a resolution to the crisis. Most important of all, however, was the U.S. government's willingness to work in conjunction with other political and civic actors to support Dominican democracy.
