Abstract

In June 2002, the G8 countries pledged 20 billion dollars over ten years to their “Global Partnership against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction” (Global Partnership). Under this initiative, the G8 countries will support specific cooperation projects, initially in Russia, to address non-proliferation, disarmament, counter-terrorism and nuclear safety issues. Among priority concerns are the dismantlement of decommissioned nuclear submarines and the disposition of fissile materials.

The aim of the seminar was to assess the expectations of the G8 Summit that will take place in Evian-les-Bains at the beginning of June 2003, to clarify the working processes associated with the G8 Global Partnership against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction, and its implications for future cooperative threat reduction activities in Northwest- Russia.

The seminar, co-sponsored and co-organised by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), brought together civil servants, researchers, and journalists. The seminar was conducted under “Chatham House Rules”.
