Bibliography on the Political Economy of Global Migration

Introduction

This bibliography assembles a preliminary set of readings on the political economy of global migration. It deals with some basic literature that has been produced from 1980 onward. Anthropological, historical, and sociological insights appear in this working paper, to the extent that they intertwine with the economics of migration. Moreover, there is a general section that introduces diverse conceptual and instrumental migration issues (comparative studies, legal issues, bibliography, concepts & measurement).

Assemblage of the material was conveniently, perhaps a bit arbitrarily, organized according to the scope of the destination region. It treats migration inside of a region, i.e. Africa, Latin-America & The Caribbean as "internal;" and migration beyond the region's geographic limits as "international." In a day of increasing globalization, disregard of national boundaries seems a minor sin.

As it happens, the bibliography's organization agrees with prevailing classifications in libraries and the synthetic literature on migration. Since some references do not fit neatly into special fields, nonetheless, the bibliography begins with a general set of references on migration. Moreover, this work might also be found guilty of a "sorting bias," for the references on North-American destinations have been prioritized, if only because publications have been prolific on this region, by far, the preferred landing territory for international migrants.

This work is directed to a general audience interested in the social sciences, and to those who are familiar with political economy issues; yet, in particular, it is addressed to the graduate scholar who wants to get updated and oriented in the vast literature on migration generated in the last fifteen years.

The idea is to give a set of references that discuss soundly some current problematics in migration studies. In this sense, the preparation of this bibliography has involved first, a quite exhaustive search of libraries' catalogs to reach a variety of books as well as journal articles; and secondly, the review of most of the material to select the relevant literature. It is hoped that the material selected will be stimulating for anyone who is researching these issues. I welcome suggestions for improvements based on its use.
