Abstract

This paper explores the interaction between Muslim intellectuals and Western socio-political ideas, particularly the concept of the nation-state, in late 19th and early 20th century India. The author locates the debates over the adaptability of Western political ideologies and institutions within the context of the evolution of Islam and Islamic political thought. The study rejects assertions of an unchanging Islam and highlights the diverse political imagination of Muslim intellectuals in India. By doing this, the working paper aims to reflect the diversity of Indian-Muslim political discourse.
