Providing Security for People: Enhancing Security through Police, Justice, and Intelligence Reform in Africa
Chris Ferguson and Jeffrey O. Isima, Editors
2004
Abstract
Security Sector Reform has continued to emerge as a powerful organising force among international actors dedicated to conflict prevention and poverty reduction. As the broader strands of the SSR concept are becoming increasingly recognisable and understood it will be important to emphasise that effective SSR implementation requires a balanced approach across the whole security sector.
Providing Security for People: Enhancing Security through Police, Justice and Intelligence Reform in Africa is the second edited volume in a series that seeks to combine greater elucidation of Security Sector Reform theory with practical knowledge and lessons from the African continent. The first volume made it possible for experienced Africans to introduce and explain the reasoning behind the general need for reforms on the continent. This publication will look at the gap-areas highlighted in the previous volume, and will concentrate on issues concerning the Police, Justice, Prison and Intelligence reforms. It will also address the academic monopoly on the Sub-Saharan Africa development/security debate by including a chapter that focuses on the direction of North African Security Sector Reform.
