Latin America and Caribbean Security Network Symposium

20-21 April 2004

Centre for Security Sector Management

Abstract

The Global Facilitation Network for Security Sector Reform (GFN-SSR) has a single strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean with the goal of strengthening civil society networks in and between the two regions. We hope to help civil society and its representative organisations foster a more informed and holistic approach to human security. This goal includes building improved channels of communication between civil society networks and regional policy makers, such as the Organisation of American States (OAS) and Caribbean Community (CARICOM), to help incorporate greater input from civil society into their agendas.

With that goal in mind the GFN-SSR organised and hosted the Latin American/Caribbean Security Networks Symposium in Jamaica at the end of April 2004. The aim of the Kingston event was to bring together all the regional and sub-regional Latin American networks to discuss shared experiences, best practice, and methodologies enabling future cooperation. Over 60 representatives from the region attended including members of CARICOM, the OAS, the international donor community, leaders of civil society networks in Latin America and the Caribbean, and ministry officials from the region and senior academics. Practitioners working to further the human security agenda in the regions were also present.
