Farid Kahhat
December 2003
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to review some of the most relevant topics in the academic literature on corruption. Although the paper focuses on the political science literature, it also makes reference to work developed in other social sciences. The first part presents the debate around the definition of the phenomenon. The second part deals with the historical context in which the academic focus on corruption arises, the understanding of it that prevailed at the time, and its subsequent evolution. The third part discusses the relationship between political regime and corruption, addressing two questions: first, under which circumstances a division of power and political competition contribute to reduce corruption?, second, why different forms of corruption have different consequences for the economic performance of any given country?.
