Biological Security & Public Health: In Search of a Global Treatment
A Report from The Aspen Strategy Group
Kurt M.Campbell and Philip Zelikow, Editors
March 2003
Abstract
In August 2002, the Aspen Strategy Group (ASG) convened a distinguished group of strategists, public health specialists, bio-security experts, and others to explore the complex intersections between global health matters and emerging worries associated with biological and chemical weapons. These are professional communities that do not normally interact, and there were obvious differences in terminology, training, and worldviews. Yet the collaboration among these various groups was extraordinarily rich and productive, yielding a more nuanced understanding of the societal and global challenges posed by dangerous diseases, both naturally occurring and man-made. The following papers represent the intellectual product of this unique endeavor and the executive summary provides prospective areas for further research and action.
