Uncharted Territory: New Frontiers of Digital Innovation
David Bollier
A Report of the Ninth Annual Aspen Institute Roundtable on Information Technology
2001
Abstract
For the past nine summers the Aspen Institute's Communications and Society Program has convened a three-day roundtable dialogue among luminaries of the information, network, financial, scientific, business, government, and academic worlds to address societal issues arising from advances in digital technologies. This Aspen Institute Roundtable on Information Technology first considers where our econ-omy and society might be headed in light of the digital revolution. The participants then exchange new insights about particular societal issues and problems, with the goal of improving the human condition as we improve the digital world.
In 1999 the dialogue originally was conceived as a follow-up to some of the Roundtable's early work in electronic commerce. Although it began as an inquiry into the "relationship beyond the transaction: e-commerce and community in the new economy," ultimately it broad-ened into what our rapporteur called "the new frontiers of digital inno-vation." In so doing, through the power of dialogueand an excellent synthesis by our rapporteur David Bollierwe have produced for the reader a volume of accessible, novel, and meaningful insights on the new economy and its implications.
